Temple Trail : Kilkari Bhairon Mandir, 26th June 2016
June 26, 2016 @ 7:00 am - 10:00 am
WHAT : Temple Trail 5 – Kilkari Bhairon Mandir
WHEN : 26th June 2016, 7 AM
WHERE : Behind Purana Qila, Pragati Maidan ( IP station on Metro seems to be nearest..)
Dedicated to Lord Bhairav, the Rudra avatar (angry incarnation) of Lord Shiva and said to be built by the Pandavas. Bheem is said to have worshipped here and attained his powers. And this is why full name of the temple is “Pandav Kaleen Sri Kilkari Bhairav Mandir”.
There are many “Bhairav Mandirs” across India. Bhairav was a demon who entered Vaishno Devi’s cave ( guarded by a monkey) forcefully. Devi took the Chandi avtar and beheaded Bhairav. Bhairav pleaded mercy and was forgiven, and also blessed by Vaishno Devi that he will be worshipped by coming generations. Beheading is why Lord Bhairav’s statute is only till the neck !
Interestingly, the offering and prasad at the temple is Alcohol – but to offer you ahve to get your own, and there are no shops nearby ! Meat is also offered ( For those who want to offer milk, “Dudhiya Bhairav Mandir” is conveniently next door 🙂 ). A well ‘Pandabon Ka Kua’ is said to serve up curative water …
Lot of Tantric rituals are performed here – not your normal Aarti fares ! Best not to take your chances on that, unless you know what you are doing ! Also, be mindful of your children !!
